Pixomondo Congratulates ‘Game of Thrones’ VFX Team on EMMY Win

Pixomondo artists took home Outstanding Special Visual Effects honors for their work on the “Game of Thrones” season two finale, “Valar Morghulis,” at the primetime Creative Arts Emmy® Awards ceremony that was held Saturday, September 15, at the NOKIA Theatre LA LIVE in Los Angeles. The winners include Pixomondo’s Rainer Gombos, Juri Stanossek, Sven Martin, Chris Stenner, Tobias Mannewitz, Thilo Ewers and Jan Fielder as well as show VFX producer Steve Kullback and VFX coordinator Adam Chazen.

“This has been an incredible year for Pixomondo artists – first the Oscar for Hugo and now the Emmy for “Game of Thrones,” said Pixomondo CEO and founder Thilo Kuther. “Having talented artists is imperative to our success and we couldn’t be more proud of Rainer, Juri, Sven, Chris, Tobias, Thilo, Jan, and the whole team. Steve Kullback and HBO were excellent partners, and our solid working relationship with them facilitated some truly fantastic work. It’s great to have everyone recognized for their efforts.”

As the primary VFX provider for the second season of HBO’s award-winning fantasy series, Pixomondo completed anywhere from 60 to over 140 VFX shots for each of the ten, hour-long episodes. Under the guidance of lead VFX supervisor Gombos and VFX supervisor Stanossek, nine of Pixomondo’s facilities contributed to the project.

Stuttgart served as the lead and did most of the set extension work and matte paintings as well as creature work and some CG gore. Frankfurt created the dragons and Berlin worked on shots featuring fluid simulations. London and Burbank handled compositing and 3D work and Burbank also helped model the dragons. Beijing composited the shots with the direwolves and was also responsible for some of the long establishing shots as well as crowd replication and matte paintings. Munich, Hamburg and Shanghai assisted with compositing, with Shanghai also contributing to 3D shots.
